Why a love cable?

Our cables are similar priced to some well-known commercial cable brands so why choose for a small brand name? What sets love cable apart from the crowd? Well, you pay for the product and not for the advertisement, package and other overhead costs. So, if you are serious about your music love cable can be a logic choice.

At love cable sound quality is put first. To achieve optimal sound quality, the noise level of a cable needs to be as low as possible. That is the only way tonal purity and detail will be preserved.

Our cable line is based on a mixture of proven geometric cable designs dating back to designs made in the early fifties to mid/late seventies. We use purer RAW materials than available at that time and we improved and oversized shielding techniques to match today’s harsh RFI/EMI environment. This cost-no-object approach towards materials we use to construct our cables allows us to achieve an extreme low noise floor and a stronger signal than most commercial cables available on the market.

love cables are not found in regular shops. love cable is exclusively sold by renowned luthiers, guitar & bass guitar repair shops, music teachers and direct sales by love cable. Production is limited to 300 > 500 meters on a monthly basis as production is labor intensive and no quality concessions will be made.

love cable pure tone

love cable is using the superior GH plugs from the USA with a solid copper core for all our unbalanced instrument cables. The XLR cables use NEUTRIK Liechtenstein connectors.

All love cables are custom made on order with the purest Long Crystal Oxygen Free Copper*. RAW materials are sourced within Europe and the USA. love cables contain biological Dutch Flax and the purest Dutch Beeswax. Soldered with lead free / flux free 3.8% Ag Solder.

Good cables will carry and support the tone of your instrument. Good cables are time correct, notes sound cleaner, fuller and with more natural sustain. Clear highs, well-defined lows and everything in between, loud and clear. We offer a detailed signal without coloration and extended flat frequency response with unlimited dynamics revealing every nuance of your technique.

No matter how many noise gates or signal optimizers you connect in the signal chain, it will not help. The bottom line is: you need good cables, as this is part of a solid fundament. A good cable will be quiet on stage and in your practice room. Sometimes even so quiet that the noise gate you purchased will become obsolete.

The only feedback coming from your guitar is the one that you intend. A good cable is not microphonic. So no strange noises, hollow sounds, pops or feedback when using our cables.

Why don’t we make cables for specific kinds of instruments?

In our opinion the tones of a guitar, bass, keyboard, violin, banjo, dobro resonator, lap steel guitar or any instrument for that matter should not be altered. Electrical requirements are essentially identical. Altering tone means losing information at some frequencies relative to others. We believe that transparent signal transfer and proper shielding is necessary to achieve this goal.

Why do you use polyethylene (PE) dielectrics in your instrument cables rather  than Teflon dielectrics?

Teflon combines a low dielectric constant (+/-2.0) with high rigidity, making it ideal for applications in which vibration is a major concern. Polyethylene (PE) has a nominally higher dielectric constant (+/-2.2), but has a higher flexibility than Teflon, thus making it a more suitable dielectric for cables.

Why Flax, Unbleached Cotton and Beeswax?

After extensive testing with different materials we started to use Dutch Biological Flax, Unbleached Cotton and the Purest Dutch Beeswax as it has several benefits in eliminating mechanical and electrical vibrations, has outstanding insulation properties, reduces cable stress and strengthens the cable/plug connection.

Cable Length

Keep your cables as short as possible to get the job done. Even with a good cable, you want to keep the length short. (The longer your cable, the more your signal will be attenuated). For effect pedals, you need only 0.25m of cable in-between. love cable does not recommend instrument cables longer than 9 meters. (We do make them if needed) As for microphone/balanced cables longer lengths are less relevant, but the shorter the better.

Will a love cable make a difference in my set-up?

A system is as good as the sum of its parts, our experience is that our cables perform great in, and are in general able to improve any set-up /system. But there are more ‘correct’ sounding cables on the market but we did not find any that are priced as modest as our cables.

Lots of cables, in all price levels from ridiculously cheap to preposterously expensive tend to function as a tone control, as far as possible our cables don’t. So were not trying to make the best sounding cables but we try to create a cable capable of transporting an electromagnetic waveform without errors or alterations. The result is a cable that does not ‘sound’ but transfers the signal.

So while love cable might not have an immediate ‘WOW factor’ you’ll be impressed if your aim is to get a faithful musical experience. We are convinced that you will appreciate our cables.

Can I use just a single love cable or do I have to replace all of the cables in my rig? Which part of the signal chain is most important when using effects?

The general rule is that the same materials, construction and design principal of cable within the signal path will give the optimal result. If you must prioritize, we recommend you do so as follows:

  • From the instrument or source to the amplifier or from the instrument to the first processor
  • Last processor to amplifier
  • Between processors
  • Amplifier to speaker
  • Power Cable

The two main factors that determine this priority are signal level and cable length. Low-level signals, like electric guitar, bass guitar or other instrument/component signals, benefit most from improved conductivity. So if you have to replace only one cable in a chain, begin with the cable from the instrument/component and upgrade from there.

What about pedal boards?

You will certainly benefit from upgrading the cables to and from your pedal board. Attenuation is directly proportional to the length of a signal chain, whether the signal chain consists of a single cable or many cables. The length of the cables on your pedal board will contribute directly to the attenuation of your signal.

Is cable break-in time and cable directionality, myth or fact?

All cables need a break-in time to reach their full sonic potential, this break-in time varies from cable to cable and this might take from 10 to 20 hours for the instrument cables and from 40 up to 200 hours in real life situations for the interconnects, loudspeaker cables and power cords. After the required break-in period the whole frequency spectrum will open up and a more natural tonal balance will be achieved. Low frequencies will show more authority, while high frequencies will sound smoother. All which results in a better soundstage, more resolution and dynamical contrast. After use cables become directional so once you plug in a cable a certain way keep using the cable this way.

How to take care of my cables?

A cable is just like other gear an investment, when you take good care a love cable lasts a lifetime, the cable will show its true performance after several hours of use and this performance lasts over the years. Treat all cables with care and avoid extreme bending, turning and excessive heat (such as direct contact with a radiator) as this might damage the structural integrity of the cable.

How to coil (or roll) your love cable?

Improper coiling is the main reason that cables fail. Spending lots of time taking knots and twists out of cables is not what one wants. There is only one way to coil cables properly. This is called ‘over/under’ wrap. By altering the direction of each coil there is no twist stored in the cables structure. If you follow this the over/under wrap correctly, cables will lay out twist-free in seconds and your cables will last a lifetime.

Cleaning your cable

When you want to clean your cable please use a damp wet cloth and slight gently over the cable. Keep your cables straight, when not in use please store them in a nice loop (see how to coil your love cable) without twists, when a lot on the road or when a cable is used in different environments the jacks of instrument cables might loose its shine… clean the contacts of the connector (if needed) once in a while with #00 steel wool or a non scratch Scotch-Brite to get rid of the corrosion and blemishes.

A love cable is a lifetime investment when treated normally, in fact the cable becomes better through time. No worries, just plug, play and enjoy!love cable plenty gain

What is the difference between ‘Stage Finish’ and ‘Luxury Finish’?

All love cables (from June 2016) are double sleeved for extreme durability. The Stage Finish is intended for those that use cables mainly on stage as these cables (with exception of the PRO SEC* and PRO UTIC*) are easy to “wash”. From experience we know that it is nice to get rid of that regular stage dirt, beer, liquor and softdrinks building up in the sleeving of cables.
just make a lukewarm bath with some detergent, we advice B-Clean but any dish-wash soap will work. MAKE SURE THAT YOU KEEP THE PLUGS and the CRIMPED SLEEVE OUT OF THE WATER. Move your proper coiled cable through the bath till the dirt is washed out, flush with clean water and let your cable dry.
For the Luxury Finish and the PRO SEC* and PRO UTIC*, please follow instructions as mentioned above at the section ‘Cleaning your cable’.

Why does our “Ultimate home audio” product line only has a few products?

A living room is not a studio. But for love cable the basics are the same. We build cables that meet the specifications they were intended for: to reproduce audio as honest as possible.

Most owners of high end audio setups & audiophile playback systems prefer a ‘tuned’ sound rather than achieve the absolute truth. Often their quest for the ‘Holy Grail’ is endless and not realistic. love cable makes products for those that are cured from so-called ‘audiophilia nervosa’.

If you are ready to start listening to music, you might want to get in touch with either love cable, or one of our official representatives, so we can start a dialogue and can advise you in the most satisfying way.

All ‘ultimate home audio’ love cables are made with the same high grade RAW materials that are utilized in all other love cables. In this way we can offer value for money.

Besides audio cabling love cable/Tonmeister also offers services in the field of acoustics and audio design, either for live stage, studio or high end audio. We work with an extensive network of skilled people, so we are able to design and realize your audio based projects from A to Z.
