"The Audiophile Lexicon describes what a listener hears. This one describes what an engineer measured, calculated or specified so that there was something worth hearing at all."
This lexicon defines the core electrical, acoustic and psychoacoustic terms used throughout our technical documentation, spanning circuit design, loudspeaker engineering, digital audio and room acoustics. A
Absolute Phase. The correspondence between the polarity of the original acoustic event and the polarity of the reproduced signal. Preserving absolute phase keeps a note's initial pressure wave, compression or rarefaction, consistent from microphone to loudspeaker.
Absorption Coefficient. A number between 0 and 1 describing the fraction of incident sound energy absorbed by a material rather than reflected, measured per frequency band.
Acoustic Absorption. The conversion of acoustic energy into heat or other non-acoustic energy by a surface or material. Absorption is used to control reflections and reverberation.
Acoustic Impedance. The relationship between sound pressure and particle velocity at a given point. It governs how efficiently acoustic energy is transferred between media and surfaces.
Acoustic Power. The total acoustic energy radiated by a source per unit time, expressed in watts. Unlike SPL, it is not directly dependent on the listener's distance from the source.
Acoustic Treatment. The deliberate use of absorption, diffusion and bass control to manage a room's acoustic behaviour. Treatment should complement correct loudspeaker placement rather than compensate for poor geometry.
Active Crossover. An electronic crossover operating before amplification, normally using separate amplifier channels for different loudspeaker drivers. It can provide precise control of level, slope, phase and protection.
ADC (Analogue-to-Digital Converter). A device that samples a continuous analogue signal and represents it as discrete digital values.
AES/EBU. A balanced digital audio interface standard, typically carried on XLR connectors, used to transmit PCM audio between professional and high-end consumer equipment.
Air Core Inductor. An inductor wound without a magnetic core material, avoiding core saturation and hysteresis distortion at the cost of a larger physical size for a given inductance. Sometimes used in passive crossovers.
Aliasing. A digital conversion artifact in which frequencies above the Nyquist frequency are represented incorrectly as lower frequencies. Anti-aliasing filters prevent this during analogue-to-digital conversion.
Ambient Noise. Background sound present in an environment, independent of the signal being measured or reproduced, which sets a practical floor for audible detail.
Amplifier Class. A classification of amplifier output-stage operation. Class A conducts continuously for the full signal cycle at the cost of efficiency; Class B and AB conduct for only part of the cycle to improve efficiency; Class D switches rapidly on and off, using pulse-width modulation and a reconstruction filter to recover the audio signal.
Amplifier Headroom. The amount of additional output capability available above the normal operating level before clipping occurs. Adequate headroom preserves musical peaks and prevents transient compression.
Amplitude. The magnitude of an audio signal. In acoustic measurements, amplitude is commonly expressed as sound pressure or decibels.
Anechoic Chamber. A room designed to minimize internal sound reflections, used for loudspeaker and acoustic measurements that require an approximation of free-field conditions.
Antinode. A point of maximum displacement or pressure variation in a standing wave, as opposed to a node, where displacement is minimal.
Array. An arrangement of multiple loudspeaker drivers operating together, used to control directivity, increase output, or extend bandwidth beyond what a single driver can achieve.
Attack Time. The time a compressor, limiter or envelope detector takes to respond after a signal exceeds a threshold. More broadly, also describes how quickly an instrument's sound reaches its initial peak level.
Attenuation. A reduction in signal level, whether deliberate, as in a volume control, or unwanted, as in cable loss.
A-Weighting. A frequency weighting curve applied to sound level measurements that approximates the sensitivity of human hearing at moderate listening levels, used to produce a single dB(A) figure from a complex spectrum.
Azimuth. The angular alignment of a playback head or stylus relative to the recorded track, whether on tape or vinyl. Incorrect azimuth reduces high-frequency response and channel separation.
B
Back EMF. The voltage a loudspeaker driver generates as its voice coil moves within the magnetic field, acting back against the amplifier. It is central to how damping factor and amplifier output impedance influence driver control.
Baffle. The front structure of a loudspeaker that supports the drivers and controls their transition from enclosed to free-space radiation.
Baffle Step. The frequency-dependent change in radiation caused by a loudspeaker transitioning from approximately half-space to full-space radiation.
Balanced Connection. A signal connection using two signal conductors with opposite polarity plus a reference/shield. Differential reception allows common-mode interference to be rejected.
Bandpass Filter. A filter that passes frequencies within a defined range while attenuating frequencies above and below it.
Bandwidth. The range of frequencies over which a system, component or filter operates within a specified response criterion.
Bass Extension. The lowest frequency range a loudspeaker or system can reproduce at a specified performance level.
Bass Reflex. A loudspeaker enclosure using a tuned port or passive radiator to reinforce low-frequency output and extend bass response.
Bel. The base-ten logarithmic unit from which the decibel, one tenth of a bel, is derived, named after Alexander Graham Bell.
Bi-Amping. Driving the low- and high-frequency sections of a loudspeaker with separate amplifier channels, typically after an active or passive crossover, to increase headroom and reduce interaction between sections.
Bit Depth. The number of bits used to represent each sample in a digital audio signal, directly setting the number of quantization levels and the theoretical dynamic range. Sixteen-bit audio provides roughly 96 dB of dynamic range; twenty-four-bit extends this considerably further.
Boundary Effect. The reinforcement of certain frequencies, mainly bass, caused by a loudspeaker's proximity to room boundaries such as walls, floor and corners.
Break-In. The period during which a newly manufactured mechanical or electromechanical component, such as a loudspeaker suspension, settles into its intended operating characteristics. Distinct from claims of cable break-in, for which no broadly accepted electrical mechanism has been established.
Butterworth Filter. A filter alignment designed for maximally flat passband response, commonly used in crossover and analogue filter design.
C
Cabinet Resonance. Unwanted vibration of a loudspeaker enclosure caused by mechanical excitation. Proper construction minimizes stored energy and coloration.
Capacitance. The property of a conductor arrangement that stores electrical charge, expressed in farads. In audio cables, capacitance forms a low-pass filter together with source and load impedance, and can affect high-frequency response if excessive.
Cardioid. A directional pickup or radiation pattern shaped like a heart, most sensitive on-axis and rejecting sound from directly behind.
Cascode. A two-transistor amplifier configuration that improves bandwidth and reduces certain distortion mechanisms compared with a single common-emitter or common-source stage.
Channel Separation. The degree to which the signal in one channel remains isolated from the other, expressed in decibels. Poor channel separation narrows the stereo image.
Characteristic Impedance. The impedance a transmission line presents to a signal travelling along it, set by its conductor geometry and dielectric rather than its length. Digital and RF cables (S/PDIF, AES/EBU, word clock, Ethernet) should match this value to source and load to avoid reflections.
Chebyshev Filter. A filter alignment offering a steeper rolloff than a Butterworth filter at the cost of ripple in the passband or stopband.
Clipping. A form of severe nonlinear distortion occurring when an amplifier or converter reaches its maximum voltage or current capability.
Clock Recovery. The process by which a digital audio receiver reconstructs a stable timing reference from an incoming data stream, critical to minimizing jitter in interfaces such as S/PDIF.
Coaxial Driver. A loudspeaker arrangement in which two or more drivers share a common acoustic axis.
Coherence. A measure of how consistently the phase relationship between two signals is maintained across frequency, used in acoustic measurement to judge how much of a response is due to the signal under test versus noise or nonlinearity.
Comb Filtering. A pattern of regular peaks and dips in frequency response caused by the same signal arriving at the listener via two paths with a small time offset, commonly from a nearby reflecting surface or a mismatched pair of drivers.
Common-Mode Rejection. The ability of a differential input to reject signals that appear equally on both conductors of a balanced connection.
Compliance. The mechanical springiness of a loudspeaker suspension or phono cartridge stylus assembly, describing how readily it moves under a given force.
Compression Driver. A high-frequency driver in which the diaphragm operates into a small coupling chamber before a horn, increasing acoustic loading and efficiency.
Coupling Capacitor. A capacitor used to pass an AC audio signal between stages while blocking DC, avoiding the transfer of bias voltages that could affect downstream circuitry or operating point.
Crest Factor. The ratio between a signal's peak level and its RMS level. High crest factor indicates significant dynamic peaks.
Crossover Frequency. The frequency region at which responsibility for reproducing the signal transitions from one driver or system section to another.
Crossover Slope. The rate at which a crossover attenuates frequencies outside a driver's passband, expressed in decibels per octave. Steeper slopes, such as 24 dB/octave, isolate drivers more sharply than shallower ones, such as 6 dB/octave.
Crosstalk. Unwanted coupling of signal from one channel or circuit into another, degrading channel separation and stereo imaging.
Current Feedback Amplifier. An amplifier topology that senses output current rather than voltage to set gain, offering very high slew rate and bandwidth largely independent of gain setting.
Cutoff Frequency. The frequency at which a filter's output has fallen by 3 dB relative to the passband, marking the practical boundary between passband and stopband.
D
D'Appolito Configuration. A driver arrangement placing a tweeter symmetrically between two identical woofers, chosen to control vertical directivity around the crossover region.
DAC (Digital-to-Analogue Converter). A device that converts digitally represented audio into an analogue electrical signal.
Damping Factor. The ratio of a loudspeaker's nominal impedance to the amplifier's output impedance. A higher value generally indicates stronger electrical control of the driver.
DC Offset. A constant voltage superimposed on an audio signal that should otherwise average to zero, capable of causing driver offset, reduced headroom or audible thumps if not removed.
De-Emphasis. A frequency response curve applied on playback to reverse a complementary pre-emphasis curve applied during recording or broadcast, used to improve signal-to-noise ratio in some formats.
Decay. The reduction of acoustic or mechanical energy over time after excitation stops. Decay behaviour is critical in room acoustics and loudspeaker design.
Decibel (dB). A logarithmic unit expressing the ratio between two values of power, voltage or sound pressure. Because human hearing perceives loudness logarithmically, the decibel scale corresponds more closely to subjective impression than a linear unit would.
Decoupling. Mechanically isolating a component from vibration, or electrically isolating a circuit stage from supply noise, depending on context.
Delta-Sigma Modulation. A method of analogue-to-digital or digital-to-analogue conversion using a high oversampling rate and noise shaping to achieve high resolution from a coarse, often single-bit, quantizer. Used in the majority of modern DAC and ADC chips.
Diaphragm. The moving surface of a loudspeaker driver or microphone that couples mechanical motion to the surrounding air.
Differential Amplifier. An amplifier stage that amplifies the difference between two input signals while rejecting any component common to both, the basis of balanced-input circuitry.
Diffraction. The bending and scattering of sound waves around an obstacle or through an opening comparable in size to the wavelength. Loudspeaker cabinet edges and baffle geometry are common sources of diffraction-related coloration.
Digital Filter (FIR/IIR). A mathematical filter applied to a digital signal, most commonly implemented as finite impulse response (FIR) or infinite impulse response (IIR). The choice governs the tradeoff between phase linearity, pre-ringing and computational complexity in a DAC's reconstruction filter.
Direct Coupling. Connecting circuit stages without an intervening coupling capacitor or transformer, extending low-frequency response at the cost of requiring careful DC bias management.
Directivity. The degree to which a loudspeaker concentrates acoustic energy in particular directions.
Directivity Index. A single-number measure of how strongly a loudspeaker concentrates sound on-axis relative to a theoretical omnidirectional source at the same frequency, expressed in decibels.
Discrete Circuit. A circuit built from individual transistors and passive components rather than an integrated circuit, sometimes chosen for particular sonic or performance characteristics in high-end designs.
Dispersion. The angular distribution of sound radiated by a loudspeaker. Smooth dispersion produces predictable interaction with the listening room.
Distortion. Any alteration of the original signal introduced by a system. Harmonic, intermodulation, temporal and nonlinear distortion are among the major categories.
Dither. A small amount of deliberately added noise applied before requantization, used to randomize quantization error so it does not correlate with the signal as audible distortion.
Dropout. A momentary, unwanted loss of signal, commonly caused by a physical connection fault, a wireless interruption, or a digital error the system cannot correct.
DSD (Direct Stream Digital). A one-bit digital audio encoding format sampled at a very high rate, used natively by SACD and certain high-resolution downloads, as distinct from multi-bit PCM encoding.
DSP (Digital Signal Processor). A processor, or the algorithms it runs, used to perform filtering, room correction, crossover and other signal manipulation in the digital domain.
Dual Mono. An amplifier or preamplifier topology using fully separate power supplies and channels for left and right, intended to minimize crosstalk between channels.
Dynamic Range. The difference between the quietest reproducible signal and the maximum usable signal level before unacceptable noise or distortion.
E
Ear Canal Resonance. A natural acoustic gain of roughly 10-15 dB in the 2-4 kHz region produced by the resonant length of the human ear canal, a major factor in the ear's heightened sensitivity in that range.
Early Reflection. Sound that reaches the listener shortly after the direct sound, having bounced once or twice off nearby room surfaces, strongly influencing perceived spaciousness and clarity.
Eddy Current. A circulating electrical current induced within a conductor by a changing magnetic field, a source of loss in transformers, inductors and loudspeaker motor structures.
Effective Mass. The total moving mass of a loudspeaker diaphragm assembly, including the air load it must move, as distinct from its unloaded mechanical mass.
Efficiency. The proportion of electrical input power converted into useful acoustic output. Loudspeaker efficiency is distinct from sensitivity.
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). Unwanted electromagnetic energy that can couple into audio circuits and create noise or interference.
Envelope. The overall shape of a sound's amplitude over time, commonly described in terms of attack, decay, sustain and release.
Equal-Loudness Contour. A curve, also known as a Fletcher-Munson curve, describing how the sound pressure level required for a tone to be perceived as equally loud varies with frequency. It explains why bass and treble appear to diminish at lower listening volumes.
Equalization. The deliberate alteration of frequency response using filters. Corrective equalization should normally address measured, well-understood problems.
Equivalent Input Noise (EIN). The noise level of an amplifier stage referred back to its input, allowing fair comparison of noise performance between stages of different gain.
ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance). The internal resistive loss of a capacitor or inductor, which becomes significant at high frequencies or high currents and can affect a component's real-world performance versus its nominal rating.
Excursion. The physical displacement of a loudspeaker diaphragm from its rest position. Greater excursion allows higher low-frequency output but increases mechanical demands.
F
Farad. The unit of capacitance. Audio-relevant capacitor and cable capacitance values are typically expressed in microfarads, nanofarads or picofarads.
Farfield. The acoustic region sufficiently distant from a source that sound propagation can be treated approximately as a travelling wave and angular radiation characteristics are stable.
Feedback (Negative Feedback). A design technique in which a portion of an amplifier's output is fed back out of phase to its input, reducing distortion and output impedance at the cost of potential stability and transient artifacts if applied in excess. Some high-end designs deliberately minimize feedback to preserve open-loop linearity.
Ferrite. A ceramic magnetic material used in cores for inductors and transformers, and in clip-on chokes intended to suppress high-frequency RF interference on cables.
FFT (Fast Fourier Transform). An efficient algorithm for converting a time-domain signal into its frequency-domain representation, the basis of most modern acoustic and electrical measurement software.
Filter Order. The steepness classification of a filter, determined by the number of reactive elements it contains. Each order adds approximately 6 dB per octave of additional rolloff.
First Reflection Point. The specific location on a room boundary, such as a side wall, where the first strong early reflection to reach the listening position originates, often targeted for acoustic treatment.
Formant. A resonant frequency band characteristic of a particular vowel sound or instrument body, shaped by the physical dimensions of the vocal tract or resonant structure producing it.
Free Field. A sound field free of reflecting surfaces, in which sound propagates outward from a source without interference, the theoretical condition an anechoic chamber approximates.
Frequency Domain. The representation of a signal in terms of its constituent frequencies and their amplitudes, as opposed to the time domain.
Frequency Response. The change in output level as a function of frequency. It is one of the most fundamental measurements of an audio system.
Fs (Resonant Frequency). One of the Thiele/Small parameters: the free-air resonant frequency of a loudspeaker driver, at which its mechanical and electrical reactances cancel.
Fundamental Frequency. The lowest frequency component of a periodic waveform. Higher harmonics occur at integer multiples of the fundamental.
G
Gain. The ratio by which a system increases or decreases signal amplitude, usually expressed in decibels.
Galvanic Isolation. A design technique that prevents direct electrical current flow between two circuits while still allowing signal or power transfer, typically via a transformer or optocoupler, used to break ground loops.
Ground Loop. An unwanted current path created by multiple grounding points at different electrical potentials. It can introduce audible hum.
Ground Plane. A common conductive reference layer or point in a circuit or system to which all ground connections refer, used to minimize noise coupling and ground loops.
Group Delay. The time delay experienced by the envelope of a signal as a function of frequency. Excessive variation can indicate phase or resonance problems.
H
Half-Space Loading. The acoustic loading condition when a loudspeaker radiates into a hemisphere rather than a full sphere, as occurs when mounted on or near a large boundary such as a wall.
Harmonic Distortion. Additional frequency components generated at integer multiples of the original signal frequency by nonlinear behaviour.
Harmonic Series. The sequence of frequencies at integer multiples of a fundamental frequency, which together determine the timbre of a musical note.
Headroom. The margin between normal operating level and the maximum level a component can reproduce without clipping or unacceptable distortion.
Headshell. The removable mount at the end of a tonearm that holds the phono cartridge.
Hearing Threshold. The minimum sound pressure level detectable by a listener under defined conditions. It varies strongly with frequency and individual hearing.
Helmholtz Resonator. An acoustic resonator consisting of an enclosed volume of air connected to the outside through a narrow opening, the operating principle behind bass reflex ports and certain room bass traps.
Hertz (Hz). The unit of frequency, equal to one cycle per second.
High-Pass Filter. A filter that passes frequencies above a chosen cutoff while attenuating those below it.
Horn Loading. A loudspeaker design in which a flared acoustic horn couples a driver's diaphragm to the room, increasing efficiency and directivity control, particularly at higher frequencies.
Hum. Unwanted low-frequency noise, typically at the mains frequency (50 or 60 Hz) or its harmonics, usually caused by ground loops, inadequate shielding or power supply ripple.
Hysteresis. The lag between a change in an applied magnetic field and the resulting change in a material's magnetization, a source of core loss and distortion in transformers and inductors.
I
I/V Converter (Current-to-Voltage Converter). A circuit stage, common at the output of current-output DAC chips, that converts a current signal into a voltage signal for further amplification.
IEC Connector. A standardized mains power connector commonly used on audio equipment, most often the three-pin IEC C13/C14 pattern.
Impedance. The total opposition a circuit presents to alternating current, combining resistance with the frequency-dependent effects of capacitance and inductance. Unlike simple resistance, impedance varies with frequency and is expressed as a complex quantity with magnitude and phase.
Impulse Response. A measurement showing how a loudspeaker or system reacts to a very short signal. It reveals timing accuracy, resonances, reflections, polarity and phase behaviour.
Inductance. The property of a conductor that opposes changes in current flow, expressed in henries and arising from the magnetic field generated around the conductor. In cables, inductance forms part of characteristic impedance and can affect high-frequency transfer over long runs.
Infinite Baffle. A loudspeaker mounting arrangement, theoretical or physical, in which the front and rear radiation of a driver are fully separated by an infinitely large baffle, preventing acoustic cancellation at low frequencies.
Input Sensitivity. The voltage required to drive a component to its rated output. Correct gain matching ensures maximum dynamic range while avoiding clipping or unnecessary noise.
Insertion Loss. The reduction in signal level caused by inserting a component, cable or connector into a signal path, typically expressed in decibels.
Insulation Resistance. The resistance a cable or component's insulating material presents to current leakage, relevant to safety and to minimizing signal loss in high-impedance circuits.
Integrated Amplifier. A single chassis combining a preamplifier and power amplifier, as distinct from separate components.
Interconnect. A cable carrying line-level signals between components. A properly engineered interconnect minimizes capacitance, shielding deficiencies and connector losses while remaining electrically transparent.
Interference. Unwanted electrical or electromagnetic energy entering the audio path. Good grounding, shielding and circuit design reduce interference before it becomes audible.
Intermodulation Distortion (IMD). Distortion in which two or more frequencies interact nonlinearly to produce additional frequencies at their sums and differences. Generally considered more audible than harmonic distortion of similar magnitude, since the added tones are not musically related to the original signal.
Intersample Peak. A signal peak that occurs between two adjacent PCM samples and can exceed 0 dBFS on reconstruction even though no individual sample does, a consideration in digital mastering and playback headroom.
Isolation Transformer. A transformer used to electrically separate a circuit from its power source or from another circuit, commonly for safety, noise reduction or breaking ground loops.
J
Jitter. Small timing inaccuracies in a digital audio clock. Excessive jitter can degrade stereo imaging, transient precision and low-level detail. Well-designed digital equipment uses low-jitter clock architectures and careful reclocking to keep jitter close to the noise floor, though the audibility of very low residual jitter levels remains debated.
K
Kelvin Connection. A four-wire measurement technique that separates current-carrying and voltage-sensing conductors, eliminating the effect of lead and contact resistance from a resistance or impedance measurement.
Kilohertz (kHz). A unit of frequency equal to one thousand hertz. Human hearing typically extends to approximately 20 kHz under ideal conditions.
Klippel Analysis. A comprehensive measurement system used to evaluate loudspeaker linearity, distortion, motor symmetry, suspension behaviour and radiation characteristics.
L
Latency. The delay between an input signal and its reproduced output. In music playback latency is generally irrelevant unless digital processing introduces excessive delay in multi-channel or live-monitoring applications.
Least Significant Bit (LSB). The bit in a digital word representing the smallest possible change in value, setting the resolution floor of a digital audio sample.
Line Level. The nominal signal level used between audio components, typically around -10 dBV (consumer) or +4 dBu (professional), as distinct from the much lower level of a phono or microphone signal.
Linear Phase. A system where all frequencies experience identical time delay, preserving waveform timing relationships.
Linear Power Supply. A power supply that regulates voltage using a linear pass element rather than high-frequency switching, generally favored in sensitive analogue audio circuits for its low switching noise.
Linearity. The ability of a component to reproduce signals proportionally without adding distortion or altering tonal balance.
Lissajous Pattern. A figure formed by plotting one channel's signal against the other on an oscilloscope, used to visually assess stereo phase and channel balance.
Listening Axis. The reference angle at which a loudspeaker is intended to be heard. Well-designed loudspeakers maintain consistent response on and off this axis.
Load Impedance. The impedance a source circuit sees looking into whatever it is driving, whether a loudspeaker, cable or input stage.
Lossless Compression. Digital audio data compression that reduces file size while allowing the original bit-exact data to be fully reconstructed on playback, as distinct from lossy compression, which discards information.
Loudness. The subjective perception of sound level. Loudness differs from measured sound pressure level because human hearing sensitivity varies with frequency and listening level.
Low-Pass Filter. A filter that passes frequencies below a chosen cutoff while attenuating those above it.
M
Magnetic Flux. The total magnetic field passing through a given area, central to how a loudspeaker motor and any transformer or inductor operate.
Mains Filtering. Circuitry or a separate device used to reduce high-frequency noise present on the AC power line before it reaches sensitive audio equipment.
Masking. A psychoacoustic effect in which the audibility of one sound is reduced by the presence of another, typically louder, sound close to it in frequency or time.
Master Clock. A highly stable timing reference synchronizing digital audio devices. Superior clock stability minimizes timing errors.
Mechanical Resonance. The natural vibration of a physical structure. Cabinets, stands and even electronic components may exhibit resonances that color reproduced sound if not properly controlled.
Microphonics. Unwanted electrical signals generated when a component, such as a vacuum tube or capacitor, is mechanically vibrated, effectively behaving as an unintended microphone.
Minimum Phase. A system in which phase response is uniquely and mathematically determined by its amplitude response, with no excess delay. Most well-behaved analogue audio circuits and many loudspeakers approximate minimum-phase behaviour over at least part of their range.
Modal Behaviour. The way standing waves develop inside a listening room. Room modes dominate low-frequency performance.
Modulation Distortion. Distortion created when one signal influences another through nonlinear behaviour.
Mono Compatibility. The ability of a stereo recording to sum into mono without significant tonal or phase-related degradation.
Moving Coil / Moving Magnet. The two principal phono cartridge designs. Moving-magnet cartridges attach a small magnet to the stylus assembly and use fixed coils, giving higher output at lower cost; moving-coil cartridges attach the coils to the stylus assembly, generally offering lower moving mass and finer resolution at the expense of output level and cost.
Moving Mass. The total mass of a loudspeaker diaphragm, voice coil and associated moving parts.
Multi-Amping. Using a separate power amplifier for each driver or frequency section of a loudspeaker system, typically paired with an active crossover.
Mutual Inductance. The property by which a changing current in one conductor induces a voltage in a nearby conductor, relevant to crosstalk between adjacent cables and to transformer operation.
N
Nearfield Listening. A listening arrangement where the listener sits relatively close to the loudspeakers, reducing the influence of room reflections.
Noise Floor. The residual level of unwanted electrical or acoustic noise present in a system.
Noise Shaping. A technique used in digital-to-analogue and analogue-to-digital conversion that pushes quantization noise out of the audible band and into higher, less audible frequencies.
Nominal Impedance. The stated impedance of a loudspeaker, expressed in ohms, representing its typical operating value. Actual impedance varies continuously with frequency.
Non-Linearity. Any behaviour where output is no longer directly proportional to input. Non-linearities generate distortion, compression and coloration.
Notch Filter. A filter that sharply attenuates a narrow band of frequencies while leaving those on either side largely unaffected.
Nyquist Frequency. Half the sampling frequency of a digital recording.
O
Octave. A doubling or halving of frequency. For example, 100 Hz to 200 Hz represents one octave.
Off-Axis Response. The frequency response measured away from the loudspeaker's primary listening axis.
Ohm (Ω). The unit of electrical resistance or impedance.
Ohm's Law. The fundamental relationship stating that voltage equals current multiplied by resistance (V = IR), underlying nearly all basic circuit analysis.
On-Axis Response. The frequency response measured directly in front of a loudspeaker along its primary listening axis.
Op-Amp (Operational Amplifier). An amplifying circuit block, whether implemented as an integrated circuit or from discrete components, used as a building block in preamplifiers, active crossovers and many other audio circuits.
Open Baffle. A loudspeaker design in which drivers are mounted on a flat panel with no enclosure, allowing front and rear radiation to interact directly, producing a dipole radiation pattern.
Open Loop Gain. The gain of an amplifier stage before negative feedback is applied, a key factor in how much feedback can be used and how it affects distortion and stability.
Output Stage. The final amplifying stage in an amplifier, directly responsible for driving the load and typically the dominant factor in an amplifier's power delivery and output impedance characteristics.
Overhang. Continued cone or system movement after the input signal has stopped. Excessive overhang reduces transient precision.
Oversampling. A digital processing technique operating at a higher sampling rate than the original recording.
Overshoot. A response that temporarily exceeds its final settled value before stabilizing, often seen in step response measurements of loudspeakers or filters.
P
Parametric Equalizer. An equalizer allowing independent adjustment of frequency, bandwidth (Q) and gain.
Passive Crossover. A crossover network positioned between amplifier and loudspeaker drivers using capacitors, inductors and resistors.
PCM (Pulse-Code Modulation). The conventional method of digital audio encoding, in which a signal is sampled at regular intervals and each sample is represented as a multi-bit binary value, as used on CD and most digital audio formats other than DSD.
Peak-to-Peak. The difference between the maximum positive and maximum negative excursion of a signal, as distinct from its RMS or peak (single-sided) value.
Permeability. A measure of how readily a material supports the formation of a magnetic field within it, relevant to transformer and inductor core materials.
Phase. The timing relationship between periodic signals. Accurate phase relationships improve imaging, coherence and transient reproduction.
Phase Alignment. The process of synchronizing drivers or loudspeakers so their acoustic output reaches the listener coherently.
Phase Coherence. The degree to which the relative phase relationships across a signal's frequency range are preserved through a system, contributing to accurate transient and imaging performance.
Phase Margin. In a feedback amplifier, the difference between the actual phase shift at the frequency where loop gain falls to unity and the 180 degrees that would cause oscillation. Adequate phase margin is required for stability.
Phon. A unit of perceived loudness that accounts for the frequency-dependent sensitivity of human hearing, defined so that a given phon value sounds equally loud at any frequency.
Pink Noise. A broadband test signal containing equal energy per octave. It is widely used for loudspeaker measurements and room analysis.
Pistonic Motion. The ideal mode of loudspeaker diaphragm movement, in which the entire surface moves uniformly in and out like a piston, without breakup or flexing.
Polar Response. A graphical representation showing how a loudspeaker radiates sound at different angles.
Polarity. The orientation of a signal relative to a reference, such as which terminal of a driver or connector corresponds to positive-going voltage. Reversed polarity on one channel can partially cancel bass and disrupt imaging.
Port Tuning. The resonant frequency of a bass reflex enclosure.
Power Compression. A reduction in loudspeaker output caused by voice-coil heating during sustained high-power operation.
Power Factor. The ratio of real power delivered to a load to the apparent power drawn from the source, relevant to how efficiently an amplifier's power supply draws current from the mains.
Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR). A measure of how well a circuit rejects noise or ripple present on its power supply rails, expressed in decibels.
Pre-Ringing. A mathematical artifact associated with certain digital filter designs, where energy appears before the transient itself.
Preamplifier. A component that provides input switching, gain and volume control at line level, feeding a power amplifier.
Precedence Effect. A psychoacoustic phenomenon, also called the Haas effect, in which the perceived location of a sound is dominated by the first-arriving wavefront, with later, closely-following reflections largely fused into it rather than heard as separate echoes.
Propagation Delay. The time a signal takes to travel through a component, cable or circuit.
Psychoacoustics. The scientific study of how the human auditory system perceives and interprets sound, forming the basis for concepts such as masking, equal-loudness contours and perceptual audio coding.
Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM). A method of encoding an analogue signal as a series of pulses of varying width, the switching technique underlying Class D amplification.
Push-Pull. An amplifier output topology using two devices operating on alternating halves of the signal cycle, which cancels certain even-order distortion products and improves efficiency compared with a single-ended stage.
Q
Q Factor (Quality Factor). A measurement describing the bandwidth or sharpness of a resonance or filter. High-Q filters affect a narrow frequency range, while low-Q filters operate more broadly.
Quantization Error. The small difference between an analogue signal's true value and its nearest representable digital value at a given bit depth, perceived as noise if not properly dithered.
R
Rarefaction. The region of reduced pressure in a sound wave, complementary to compression, together forming one complete cycle.
Rectification. The conversion of alternating current to direct current, the first stage of most linear and switching power supplies.
Reference Level. A defined signal level against which other levels are measured or calibrated, such as 0 dBFS in digital audio or a specified SPL in acoustic measurement.
Reflection. Sound energy bouncing from room surfaces before reaching the listener.
Resonance. The tendency of an object or system to vibrate strongly at specific frequencies.
Return Loss. A measure, expressed in decibels, of how well a transmission line's impedance is matched to its source and load. Higher return loss indicates less signal reflected back toward the source and a cleaner transmitted signal.
Reverberation Time (RT60). The time required for sound pressure level in a room to decay by 60 dB after a sound source stops, a primary descriptor of a room's acoustic liveliness.
RIAA Equalization. A standardized frequency response curve applied when cutting and replaying vinyl records, boosting high frequencies and cutting bass during recording, then reversing the process on playback in a phono preamplifier. It reduces low-frequency groove excursion and the audibility of high-frequency surface noise.
Ribbon Driver. A loudspeaker driver using a thin, lightweight conductive diaphragm suspended in a magnetic field, prized for very low moving mass and fast transient response, typically used for high frequencies.
Ripple. Small periodic variations in frequency response or power supply voltage.
Rise Time. The time a signal takes to transition from a low reference level to a high one, commonly 10% to 90% of final value, related to bandwidth and transient response.
RMS (Root Mean Square). A mathematical method used to express the effective value of alternating electrical signals.
Roll-Off. The gradual reduction in level beyond a filter's cutoff frequency, or more generally any gradual decline in response at the frequency extremes of a system.
Room Gain. The natural increase in low-frequency energy created by the boundaries of a listening room.
Room Mode. A standing wave created by room dimensions that reinforces or cancels specific low frequencies.
Room Ratio. The proportional relationship between a room's length, width and height, which strongly influences the distribution and severity of room modes.
S
S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format). A consumer digital audio interface standard, carried over unbalanced coaxial cable or optical (TOSLINK) connections.
Sabine Equation. A formula relating a room's reverberation time to its volume and total absorption, foundational to architectural acoustics.
Sample Rate. The number of times per second an analogue signal is measured during digital conversion.
Sample-and-Hold. A circuit stage that captures and holds an analogue voltage at a specific instant, a core building block of analogue-to-digital conversion.
Sampling Theory. The mathematical principle stating that a band-limited signal can be perfectly reconstructed when sampled at more than twice its highest frequency component.
Saturation. The point at which a magnetic core can no longer increase its magnetic flux in response to increasing current, causing distortion in transformers and inductors driven beyond this point.
Sensitivity. A loudspeaker specification indicating the sound pressure level produced from a defined electrical input, typically expressed as dB SPL at one metre.
Servo. A feedback control system, used for example to maintain accurate turntable speed or tape transport tension, or to control DC offset in a direct-coupled amplifier.
Shielding. A conductive layer surrounding a cable or circuit intended to block external electromagnetic interference from coupling into the signal.
Signal Chain. The complete sequence of components a signal passes through from source to loudspeaker.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). The relationship between the desired audio signal and unwanted background noise.
Sine Wave. A waveform representing a single pure frequency with no harmonic content, widely used as a test signal because it isolates a system's behaviour at one frequency at a time.
Single-Ended. An amplifier topology using a single active device to amplify the entire signal cycle, as distinct from push-pull. Also describes an unbalanced, single-conductor-plus-ground, signal connection.
Skin Effect. The tendency of alternating current to flow closer to a conductor's surface as frequency increases, reducing the usable cross-sectional area and increasing resistance at high frequencies. Its practical audible significance over typical loudspeaker and interconnect cable lengths remains debated.
Slew Rate. The maximum rate at which an amplifier's output voltage can change, expressed in volts per microsecond. Insufficient slew rate can distort fast transients even when small-signal bandwidth appears adequate.
Solid State. Circuitry built from semiconductor devices such as transistors, as distinct from vacuum tube (valve) circuitry.
Sound Pressure Level (SPL). The measured acoustic pressure of sound, expressed in decibels.
Soundstage. The perceived spatial presentation of recorded music, including width, depth and height.
Spectrum Analyzer. An instrument or software tool that displays a signal's amplitude as a function of frequency.
Speed of Sound. The rate at which sound propagates through a medium, approximately 343 metres per second in air at room temperature, a key figure in calculating wavelength, room modes and crossover time alignment.
Square Wave. A test waveform that alternates sharply between two levels, useful for revealing an amplifier or loudspeaker's transient and high-frequency behaviour because it contains a rich series of odd harmonics.
Standing Wave. A stationary acoustic resonance created when reflected sound reinforces or cancels itself within a room.
Star Grounding. A grounding topology in which all ground connections converge at a single common point, intended to prevent ground loops by avoiding shared return paths between circuits.
Step Response. A measurement showing how a loudspeaker reproduces an instantaneous change in signal level.
Stopband. The range of frequencies a filter is designed to attenuate, as opposed to the passband it allows through.
Subsonic Filter. A high-pass filter set below the audible range, used to remove very low-frequency energy, such as record warp or rumble, before it reaches an amplifier or loudspeaker.
Subwoofer Integration. The process of matching a subwoofer with the main loudspeakers through correct placement, crossover frequency, level and phase.
Suspension. The mechanical components, typically a spider and surround, that center a loudspeaker diaphragm and control its linear excursion.
Sweet Spot. The listening position where stereo imaging, tonal balance and timing are most accurate.
Symmetry. The geometric balance of loudspeaker placement, listening position and room boundaries.
T
THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). The sum of harmonic distortion products generated by a component, expressed as a percentage of the original signal.
THD+N (Total Harmonic Distortion Plus Noise). A combined measurement expressing both harmonic distortion products and broadband noise as a single percentage or decibel figure relative to the signal.
Thiele/Small Parameters. A set of standardized electromechanical parameters, including Fs, Qts and Vas, that characterize a loudspeaker driver and allow its behaviour in a given enclosure to be predicted mathematically.
Time Alignment. The synchronization of acoustic output from multiple drivers so their wavefronts arrive at the listener coherently.
Time Constant. The characteristic time governing how quickly a circuit responds to a change, such as in an RC filter, defined as the time to reach approximately 63% of a step change.
Time Domain. The representation of audio behaviour as it changes over time rather than frequency.
Toe-In. The inward angle of loudspeakers relative to the listening position. Adjusting toe-in influences stereo imaging, tonal balance and reflected sound.
Toslink. An optical fiber connector and interface commonly used to carry S/PDIF digital audio, providing electrical isolation between connected devices.
Tracking Force. The downward force a phono cartridge stylus exerts on the record groove, set by counterweight adjustment and critical to tracking accuracy and record wear.
Transconductance. The ratio of output current change to input voltage change in an active device, a key parameter in vacuum tube and certain transistor amplifier designs.
Transducer. Any device that converts energy from one form to another, such as a loudspeaker driver (electrical to acoustic) or a microphone (acoustic to electrical).
Transformer. A device using electromagnetic induction between two or more windings to transfer AC power or signal while changing voltage, providing impedance matching, or offering galvanic isolation.
Transient Intermodulation Distortion (TIM). A form of distortion arising when a feedback amplifier cannot respond quickly enough to a fast transient, momentarily driving it into a nonlinear region before feedback correction can act.
Transient Response. The ability of a system to reproduce rapid changes in musical signals accurately.
Transmission Line (Enclosure). A loudspeaker enclosure design using a long, often folded internal duct behind the driver, tuned to absorb or reinforce specific low frequencies, as an alternative to sealed or bass reflex loading.
Transparency. The subjective impression that a component adds little or no audible character of its own.
Tweeter. A loudspeaker driver designed to reproduce high frequencies.
Two-Way System. A loudspeaker using two driver types, typically a woofer and a tweeter, divided by a single crossover point.
U
Ultrasonic Frequency. Any frequency above the upper limit of normal human hearing, generally above 20 kHz.
Unbalanced Connection. A signal connection using a single signal conductor referenced to a shared ground or shield, more susceptible to noise pickup over long runs than a balanced connection.
Unity Gain. A gain setting where output voltage equals input voltage, corresponding to a voltage gain of one, or 0 dB.
USB Audio. A digital audio interface carried over a Universal Serial Bus connection, operating in adaptive, asynchronous or isochronous modes that differ in how playback timing is controlled between source and DAC.
V
Vacuum Tube (Valve). An electronic amplifying device that controls current flow through a vacuum using charged electrodes, largely superseded by solid-state devices but still used in some high-end audio designs for its particular gain and distortion characteristics.
Velocity. The speed at which a loudspeaker diaphragm moves in response to an input signal.
Virtual Ground. A circuit node held at ground potential by active circuitry rather than by a direct physical connection to ground, commonly used in single-supply op-amp designs.
Voice Coil. The winding attached to a loudspeaker diaphragm that interacts with the magnetic field to produce movement.
Voltage Divider. A simple circuit using two impedances in series to produce an output voltage that is a defined fraction of the input voltage.
VU Meter. A standardized meter displaying average signal level, calibrated to approximate the way the ear perceives loudness, as distinct from a peak meter.
W
Watt. The unit of power, equal to one joule per second, used to express both electrical power delivered by an amplifier and acoustic power radiated by a loudspeaker.
Waveform. The graphical representation of an audio signal over time.
Wavefront. The leading edge of a propagating sound wave at a given instant, treated as a surface of constant phase.
Wavelength. The physical distance occupied by one complete cycle of a sound wave.
White Noise. A broadband test signal containing equal energy at every frequency, as distinct from pink noise, which has equal energy per octave.
Windowing. A signal processing technique that tapers the edges of a captured time segment before analysis, used in FFT-based measurement to reduce spectral leakage artifacts.
Woofer. A loudspeaker driver designed to reproduce low frequencies.
Wow and Flutter. Slow (wow) and fast (flutter) variations in playback speed, historically associated with turntables and tape transports, audible as pitch instability.
X
X-Max. The maximum linear excursion a loudspeaker diaphragm can travel from rest while remaining within its magnetic gap and suspension's linear range, beyond which distortion increases sharply.
XLR Connection. A balanced audio connector using three conductors to reject external electrical interference.
Y
Yaw. The horizontal rotational orientation of a loudspeaker relative to the listening position. In practice, yaw adjustment is commonly referred to as toe-in.
Z
Zero Crossing. The point at which an alternating signal passes through zero volts or zero pressure.
Zobel Network. A resistor-capacitor network placed across a loudspeaker driver, typically in a crossover, to compensate for the driver's rising voice-coil impedance with frequency and present a more consistent load to the crossover and amplifier.
Engineering Before Opinion
The philosophy that objective design, repeatable measurements and verified performance establish the foundation of high-fidelity reproduction. Listening remains essential, but only after engineering has ensured that the reproduced signal is as faithful as possible to the original recording.
